Municipal Expenditure Analytics Project

Problem statement - In line with our governments and municipalities commitments to stamp out corruption and fraud, we commissioned a project to raise awareness and highlight the scourge of irregular, fruitless and wasteful expenditure. In the Eastern Cape alone a staggering R26 billion was recorded in irregular expenditure in the 2019 – 2020 municipal audits. These are billions of rands that in most cases go to complete waste, money that could have been used to build houses, hospitals, roads and ensure service delivery for all

The Solution - As this was a project to highlight a pressing issue, we decided to build a dashboard on the Power BI platform. We selected various municipalities from around the country to analyze which included metros and rural municipalities. The data we made use of was obtained from the municipal money website which is developed and updated by the national treasury. We were able to create some clear and concise visualizations of the data and were able to clearly see the municipalities that have been spending their money the wrong way since the year 2012.
